Characterful Architecture
Caro van de Venne - Nudus
If you look up at the CasaNova residential tower in Rotterdam, you will see that the shiny sides of the natural stone piers become wider towards the top and the rough sides become narrower. This adds extra strength to the verticality of the triangular tower.
On the campus of the Fontys Hogescholen in Eindhoven, the auditorium, which also has a closed facade because of its large hall, is equipped with glossy stainless steel facade panels with sturdy profiling. It is a facade material that the firm came across in Switzerland and that reflects the environment in a fascinating way.
Nudus wants to stimulate all the senses with her designs. The firm increasingly draws inspiration from nature. The diversity of facades at Oopen next to Utrecht Centraal, which Nudus is working on with Heatherwick Studio, is on the one hand a reflection of the diversity of users, but on the other hand also an ode to the infinite variety of fractal shapes in nature.
Circularity is playing an increasingly important role in Nudus' work. During the renovation and expansion of the Palace of Justice in The Hague, the existing natural stone facade panels will be removed from the facade, treated with a water jet, and then put back in a different way. That has never been done on that scale, but Nudus does not shy away from challenges like that. The firm enjoys pushing boundaries.
